UPDATE, Monday, October 12, 2020:

On April 6 of this year (2020), Tsunami Books Incorporated added this “Donate/Rent Fund” option to our website. Since then approximately 580 people have clicked-on and taken a look. Further, approx. $1300. has been contributed, over 90% of which went to our Escrow/Rent fund. With this in mind it is appropriate to offer a short Business Update.

First, people are buying books. Since re-opening to foot traffic, our sales are up significantly from June-September of 2019. We are moving closer to being able to pay the rent, which at present is about $9600 per month. Our Escrow Account, which you, the Community, created with your generosity, has the funds necessary to keep Tsunami out of “default” through February 2021.

At the beginning of the Pandemic Tsunami was able to secure an SBA PPP (Paycheck Protectection Program) loan of $32,000. At the same time the building owner very generously gave Tsunami what adds up to almost three months of free rent. Without that help, coupled with the great workers here at the Bookstore who took on the challenge of keeping Tsunami alive and vibrant, we most likely would have failed in the darkest months of the national shutdown. As is, we have repaid various individuals $106,000 of the approx $240,000 of our Crowdfunding Loan, all our bills are up-to-date, and there is money in the bank

On Monday, April 6, 2020, Tsunami Books Incorporated added a “Donate/Rent Fund” option to our website. Though we are not a non-profit, and your gift is not tax-deductible, as a working-class Bookstore which has hosted close to 5000 Community activities and events over the past 24 years, we think there is good reason to step outside the normal small-business paradigm to help keep us in the neighborhood.

The good news is sales at Tsunami Books continue to grow on a year-to-year basis. However, Tsunami faces a growing uncertainy—particulary in this era of covid-19 and its aftermath— that sales will grow to such an extent that we will be able to cover rent increases.

On June 1, 2018 Tsunami Books rent went from $4250 per month to $7250 per month. On June 1, 2020 Tsunami Books rent goes from $7250 per month to $9600 per month, after which we will see a (approximate) 3% increase per annum through the remaining 8 years of our Lease. Tsunami Books promises to deposit a minimum 80% of all your donations into the Tsunami Books’ Rent/Escrow Account presently active at Evergreen Land Title Company here in Eugene.
