“A Map of Her Own” is a dual-timeline historical novel. Two women—Celia in contemporary Astoria, Oregon and Emma in 1910s Camas, Washington—navigate life in male-dominated industries, searching for purpose and autonomy. Celia, a disillusioned fisherwoman recovering from a traumatic accident, becomes obessed with Emma’s Story: a young paper mill worker involved in an alll-female strike. As Celia pieces together Emma’s life, she confronts her own past and begins to chart a new course. Themes of womanhood, mother-daughter, labor, climate and resilience weave their stories together in an exploration of identity and generational connection. Both Celia and Paul, characters from (Dede’s previous nove) “Humanity’s Grace,” appear in the pages of “AMap of her Own.”
