November’s Community Spotlight focuses on Community Spotlight focuses on Oregon District 7 Representative Cedric Hayden. Mr. Hayden grew up in rural Fall Creek, Oregon, and is a sixth generation member of a Covered Wagon pioneer family. When he was growing up, his parents dedicated themselves to oral public health services in third world countries. That experience encouraged his desire to be involved in public service. As a state representative, he serves as the Vice-Chair for the House Committee for Health Care and is also a member of both the House Early Childhood and Family Supports and the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Services. Cedric and his wife Julie began Caring Hands, a dental charity, in late 2007, as a safety net for children and adults who don't have insurance or the ability to visit a dentist. Their efforts have expanded to running pro bonomobile dental clinics in rural Oregon, as well as in Micronesia in the South Pacific, Zambia, Africa, and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.
In his spare time Mr. Hayden enjoys being at home with his family and taking care of his horses. Cedric has on several occasions been honored as an outstanding quarter horse breeder. He has also summited the highest mountain on each of the seven continents, and skied to the North and South Poles. He and his family reside in Fall Creek, Oregon.
Community Spotlight is a City Club gathering in which local leaders participate in informal interviews about their lives and work. Tsunami Bookstore hosts the event on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6 pm. Light refreshments are available, and the public is encouraged to attend. There is no admission charge for Community Spotlight, but guests are invited to contribute to help cover the costs.
The audience Q&A is always interesting.
